Item upgrades are a way to increase the stats of an item. Depending on the upgrade type, it may increase an item's Mark Level or Rarity, and also boost other stats.

Item Level

When an item gets upgraded, its base stats increase in value. This value is the sum of all of an item's leveled-up perks (attack magic attack and defense). The level of an item is a widely used measure of power, and is visible on all tooltips for items. It can also be used as a gating requirement when waiting for dungeons, raids and scenarios, and to limit the amount of PvP gear a player can wear (since PvP is capped at an lower level). Players can view their average level of items on their character sheet.

Using the item level can help players evaluate the power of equipment when deciding to purchase or sell. It's an excellent indicator of an item's quality and how much damage it is capable of dealing with. Comparing items in the inventory of a seller is possible using the item's level.

On your PC, you can see the level of the item using ALT, or by using the left stick on XB1 or PS4. The item will be displayed with its full description, including the ilvl. It can also be located by hovering an item with the mouse cursor and typing /itemlevel in chat.

There are various theories about how the calculation of the item's level is done. One theory is that the level is a number derived from a formula that determines the amount an item's stats are worth. It considers the fact that different perks have different values and gems in sockets add to the overall value of the item. This can lead to an item's ilvl which is calculated and is usually very close to Blizzard's real level of the item.

It's not the only thing that affects the level of an item. The degree of the area in which the item was dropped may change its stats. For instance it can add a level to the item's haste or crit score. This means that items dropped at higher levels will have higher value than items dropped in lower-level instances.

Item Stats

The stats of an item are a major element in what makes or breaks an item for players. The game utilizes them in many ways to encourage players not to limit themselves to one weapon and to motivate them to try out other weapons. The stat mods on a weapon boost the base stats. These stat mods are then increased by the player's level.

Item upgrades add to that by increasing certain stats on the item. The rarity of an item determines its cost of upgrading. An item that is white or grey, for example, will only be upgraded one time, while an item with rare tiers can be upgraded multiple times with higher costs.

Affixes are a different method to alter the stats of an item upgrading. These are special stat boosts that can be added to an item by the player and come in a variety of sizes and shapes. The affixes can provide the item extra damage, add a special ability to the item (such as reviving dead or cutting down the cooldowns) or make the item unique by putting an exclusive name to the item.

All affixes can be being re-rolled right now by selecting them in the upgrade menu and pressing the green button. This process will cost the player a specific amount of gold and items that can be added to the upgrade gauge in the same manner as the other options for rerolling.

Players can choose to upgrade an item to a specific stat, or reroll affixes. The possible stat ranges for an item are determined by the level of the item, however all items are guaranteed to have at least 1 stat within the specified range, unless it's a unique item or an item that is a God roll from a boss in a raid.

Another thing that could be changed is the possibility of upgrading equipment without having to roll the attaches, or select which stats to increase. But as with base equipment, this would need to be performed on a per-item level, and the interface for comparing items would not display all the possible stats either lost or gained at the same time.

The Luck stat of a player increases the probability of obtaining items, the properties that are generated by loot, and the strength of these properties. However, it does not directly impact damage or the ability to upgrade items. It gives the player an opportunity to get better equipment earlier in the game. This is more useful in early game runs since players tend to prioritize the scaling of weapons and defenses over raw damage gains.

Luck can also boost the chances of upgrading items at the Blacksmith. This isn't to be confused with the Blacksmith's overall chance of upgrading, which increase with each item level. They can also be increased by using anti-materials like the Scroll of Strength and a Jewel of Blessing.

Armor, shields and weapons have a default Luck value of 40. These items can be upgraded with golden ingots, spined leather or oak boards (depending on the material of the item) to give +40 Luck or to boost the Luck of an item up to 140.

Furthermore, certain items, like the Hollow weapon that is infused with hollow can be used to increase the damage of any damage-dealing skill by five percent. These items can be found in the shop or created by using the appropriate ingredients.

Item Failure

Item upgrades are expensive and not all upgrades will succeed. Cash shop items can be used to increase the chances of success for an upgrade, or to protect players from losing their items if it is not successful.

When you upgrade an item the success rate is shown in the Honing UI. The percentage is the chances of successfully upgrading the item, and can be enhanced by adding Additional Materials or Special Materials. There are limitations on how much the success rates can be improved and the probability of an upgrade failing cannot exceed 100%..

The success of an can be affected by the luck of that item. Each item has a base success rate of 25% and every item that has Luck increases the chance of success by five percent.

The upgrade overlays for items are displayed above items in the inventory. This can block enchantment effects as well as other effects. If you wish to disable the upgrade overlays, the config option decoration.renderUpgradeOverlays can be set to False in the Item Upgrader CORE client config.
