How to Replace an replacement audi Key Cost G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video, Charles the Humble Mechanic shows how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. The sensor is situated near the edges of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear. It sends a message to the ECU through an uncolored wire T55/49, then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

It is located on the outside of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends signals to ECU pin T55/49 through a grey wire. The ECU uses this information to control boost and fuel. It also sends a signal to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used as a reference to correlate with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu must know when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is so it can activate spark and injectors in the right way.

If this sensor fails the ECU will show an error code P00160 which indicates that the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are not in sync and could indicate the chain is stretched or a jump link on the upper timing chain. The code won't appear without the additional information supplied by other sensors (G4 or G40).

Testing is a bit tricky as there are two different connector pins and they have different functions but the most effective way to test it is to measure resistance between the sensor and the ECU. It should read approximately 1000 ohms if the sensor is operating at its maximum. If you're having issues with this component, look for evidence of oil or coolant in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, as i was accelerating off the highway paytoll at a high speed, i noticed a huge drop in power. It was as if the engine had run out of gas. Or my injectors were not firing. Today, i pulled out the spark plugs. Three were drenched in gazoline, the 4th one was dry. I put a piece of tissue over each injector hole and when i start the engine without sparks, the three that have gazoline pop right out. The 4th one stays shut. I checked the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55,30/55 and 48/55 i get zero Ohm. I assume that the problem is elsewhere.

I also tried to reset the PID without success. The car will start when the G28 is unplugged, and it works fine when the G28 connected. However the intermittent misfire issue still occurs at higher RPM. The temperature sensor for the coolant (G62) shows the wrong temperature value of -49c even when i unplug it. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars but the actual pressure is zero.

I'm not sure what to do, but i believe that i've eliminated everything else. But i am afraid I might have missed something. If anyone has any ideas please let me know! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump of the g28 receives a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is similar to the G4 sender and works on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. You can easily locate the spare in a salvage shop or a parts store. It is easy to test them - simply switch your DMM into resistance mode and measure the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector's end facing upwards). They must be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU of our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY) engines must know both the position and speed of the crankshaft in order to make a decision about fuel injector timing, etc. To do this, it utilizes a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If you encounter a problem with either of these sensors, the diagnostic scanner will display codes that could cause an engine shutdown.

A damaged G28 sensor could result in an inaccurate speed counter for the gearbox or a gearbox that shifts faster than normal, or a misfire while in gear. It is possible that the sensor is failing and requires to be replaced if you encounter any of these symptoms. The good thing is that they are quite affordable and readily available particularly in the case of the Bosch model, like ours. If you prefer, GM's version of this part is an option.

5. Tachometer

A failing engine speed sensor could be the cause of a slew of problems in your car.
