One of them is that the Q5's navigation system doesn't have AI-powered obstacle avoidance which means it's susceptible to getting hung up on socks and shoes and couldn't navigate rooms with a lot of people efficiently in our tests. It doesn't also come with a camera to look around corners.
It's still a great option to consider, particularly if you're looking to save money on a iRobot Roomba and you have a bare-floored home or office. It's also extremely quiet and operates when you're at work or at school. It lacks the edge-to-edge bare floor vacuuming offered by the more expensive iRobot Roomba X30. It's also less effective in mopping, relying on disposable wet wipes that don't stay on for long and don't deal with dried-on debris. The Q5 is self-emptying cradle, however. It also comes with a front-mounted camera for real-time detection of hazards however, it wasn't 100% foolproof during our tests and was often confused by power cords or other obstructions.
Its vacuum has a high suction maximum of 7,000 Pascals which is more than enough to complete the task. It also has an option known as "Intelligent Dirt Detection", which regulates the power of the vacuum and adjusts cleaning frequency for different areas in the home based on how dirty those areas tend to be.
For larger homes it's worth looking for models that has zone or spot cleaning modes that allow you to tell the robot to clean a specific area of your home using the app or voice commands. A stairway mode is useful if you have a large furniture. Also a recharge and resume feature that lets your robot vacuum pick up right where it left off is great for busy families.
5. iRobot Roomba RX3
The RX3 is a smarter cleaner than you'd think from its price. It is a good vacuum cleaner and picked up 55% debris in our tests. (It was only second to the Roomba Q5 Pro). It also mops with one pad and a reciprocating motion which is cleaner than the majority mop cleaners for robots that we've tested. It's also highly self-sufficient, with a fully-featured app, and a self emptying base that is washable.
The well-designed iRobot app will guide you through an initial mapping run that gathers information about your floorplan as well as any "no-go" areas you have marked on the map. It can be used to create cleaning schedules, plan an area for cleaning or to prioritise your dirtiest rooms to improve performance. The app also grants access to many features, such as seasonal suggestions, custom maps, and advanced settings for your cleaning.
