How to Replace an audi key replacement G28 Engine Speed Sensor
Charles the Humble Technician shows you how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. This sensor is located on the outside of the transmission over the flywheel gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU via the grey wire T55/49 and then to the tachometer on the instrument cluster.
1. Engine Speed Sensor
The grey wire is situated at the edges of the transmission, above the flywheel ring. The sensor transmits a signal via the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU utilizes this information to control fuel and boost. It also sends an indicator to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.
The sensor is used as a reference for comparing with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu must know when the crankshaft reached TDC and also the position of the camshaft, to trigger the spark and injectors.
If this sensor fails to function, the ECU will display an error code P00160. This indicates that the Crank Shaft is out of line with the Intake Camshaft. It could also be a sign of the possibility of a chain stretch or jumpy chain link in the upper chain. However, the code won't appear on its own, without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).
It's a bit tricky to test as there are different pins on the connector and each one has different functions. The most effective method to test it is by measuring the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. When the sensor is fully functional, it should read approximately 1000 ohms. Check for evidence of coolant or oil in the connector bay if you have problems with this part.
2. Injectors
Yesterday, while accelerating at full speed from the highway paytoll, i experienced massive power loss as if the engine was running out of gas or injectors aren't firing at all. I pulled out the spark plugs this morning and found that 3 were soaked with gasoline and the fourth was dry. When I start the engine, there are no sparks, i place a tissue on the top of each of the injector holes and the 3 drenched with gazoline leap out, however the 4th stays shut. I checked the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55, 30/55 and 48/55. i get zero Ohm. I assume that the problem is elsewhere.
I also tried to reset the PID without success. The car will start when the G28 is unplugged, and it runs fine with the G28 connected. However the intermittent misfire issue continues to occur at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62), even if it is not plugged in, shows an ice temperature of -49c. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar while the actual pressure is zero.
I'm not certain what to do, but i believe that i've ruled out everything else. I'm concerned that i may have missed something. If anyone has any ideas please chime in! TIA!
3. Fuel Pump
The fuel pump in the g28 gets a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter functions similarly to the G4 sender and both work on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. You can easily find a spare in a wrecking shop or parts store. Testing them is easy to do - just put your DMM in resistance mode and measure between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's end up) and 2 (2nd from the left on the black end of the connector). They must be infinite ohms.
4. ECU
Our 20vt turbo (3B AAN, ABY and ADU) engines have an ECU that has to be aware of the speed and position of the crankshaft in order to make a decision about fuel injector timing etc. To do this, it makes use of a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If either of these sensors go wrong, you will receive codes on the diagnostic scanner that could cause engine shut down.
The signs of a failed G28 sensor include an inaccurate rev counter in the gearbox, gears shifting quicker than normal and/or a misfire when you're in gear. It is probable that your sensor is failing and needs to be replaced if you notice any of these symptoms. 5. Tachometer
