Item upgrading allows players to enhance their weapons and equipment with new affixes, boosting its stats base or providing additional benefits. To upgrade items, players must have the item level upgrade in their inventory, and also access the kiln.

Items with weak bases, such as rings, can be upgraded into stronger bases. Items with strong bases, such as Titans from eth, have no change in their stats.

Upgrade components

Upgrade components can be added to weapons, armors trinkets, weapons and gathering tools. They provide an attribute benefit, or additional effect, when the equipment is in use. They can be bought from vendors, or found in loot, dropped by enemies, or obtained as rewards from missions or chests. Some upgrades can have additional cosmetic effects. Most upgrades require the equipment to be above a certain point before they are upgraded.

To upgrade an armor, weapon or other item in the game, the player will have to select it and click the Upgrade button on the toolbar. This will display a preview on the right side of the screen showing what the expected upgrade stats will be, as well as the required element or material required to make that happen.

There are three types of upgrade components including universal upgrades, prefix upgrades and suffix upgrades. Universal upgrades, such as gems, are able to be put on any type of equipment. They offer a lower bonus than upgrade components that have a type limitation. Leveling

Path of Exile's upgrade system is different from the previous versions in a few important ways. Gear is now classified into tracks, and each item is able to be upgraded as many times before it is "leveled out." The cost of upgrading increases with each level, however the materials required do not. This allows players to concentrate their efforts on a few key items and maximize their impact, instead of spreading the upgrade costs across multiple pieces.

Rerolling

Rerolling refers to the process of changing the upgrade components of an item.
