How to Replace an audi keyless entry G28 Engine Speed Sensor
In this video, Charles the Humble Mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. This sensor is located on the edge of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU through the grey wire T55/49 and then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.
1. Engine Speed Sensor
The sensor is located at the edge of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends a signal to ECU pin T55/49 via the grey wire. The ECU then utilizes this information to regulate fuel, timig and boost. It also sends an indication to the G5 tachometer in the instrument cluster.
The sensor is used as a reference point to connect with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft reached TDC, and the position of the camshaft, so that it can activate the spark and injectors.
If this sensor fails the ECU will display an error code P00160 which indicates that the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft aren't in sync, possibly indicating the chain is stretched or a jump link on the upper chain of timing. The code will not appear without the additional information provided by other sensors (G4 or G40).
Testing is a bit tricky as there are two different pins for the connector and they perform different functions but the most effective method to test it is by measuring resistance between the sensor and the ECU. It should read approximately 1000 ohms if the sensor is at full operation. Check for signs of coolant, or oil in the connector bay if you have issues with this component.
2. Injectors
Yesterday, when i was accelerating to the fullest speed from highway paytoll i had a big cut in power as if the engine was running out of gas or the injectors are not firing anymore. This morning i pull out the spark plugs, three were soaked with gazoline and the 4th one was dry. I put tissue over each hole in the injector and when i start the engine without sparks, the 3 with gazoline jump right out. The fourth one remains closed. I checked the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55/30/55/48/55/14/55/48/ I got zero ohm. Therefore, i think the issue is in another place.
I also tried to reset the PID but without success. The audi car key case will start when the G28 is disconnected, but it runs fine with the G28 plugged in. However, the intermittent misfire problem still occurs at higher RPM. The coolant temperature sensor (G62) shows the wrong temperature value of that is -49c even after unplugging it. Also, i noticed that the gauge for oil pressure in the cockpit shows 2 bar while the actual pressure is 0.0 when i rev the engine.
I don't know what to do. I feel like i've pretty much ruled everything else out. I'm afraid i may have missed something. Please let me know should you have any suggestions! TIA!
3. Fuel Pump
The fuel pump of the g28 receives a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style sensor is the same as the G4 and both are used in the 80 100, 200, UrS and RS2 cars which is why you can easily locate one at a junkyard or at a parts store. It is easy to test them - just put your DMM into resistance mode and determine the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector's end facing upwards). They should be infinite Ohms.
4. ECU
Our 20vt turbo (3B, AAN, ABY and ADU) engines have an ECU that has to know the position and speed of the crankshaft in order to make decisions about timing of the fuel injector, for example. It utilizes a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to achieve this. If you are experiencing issues with either of these, the diagnostic scanner will show codes that could cause an engine shutdown.
A damaged G28 sensor could cause an inaccurate speed counter for your gearbox, a gearbox that shifts faster than normal, or an unfire when in gear. It is possible that the sensor is failing and requires to be replaced if you notice any of these signs. They're cheap and easy to find particularly when they're an Bosch model like ours. Alternately, the GM version of this component is also a great option.
5. Tachometer
A malfunctioning engine speed sensor could be a cause for many issues in your vehicle. You should see a resistance of approximately 1000 ohms between these two points.
