Utilizing the level of an item can help players compare the power of equipment when they decide to buy or sell. It's a measure of the item's condition and quality. Comparing items from the inventory of a seller is possible using the item level upgrade level.

On your PC, you can see the level of the item by pressing ALT or by using the left stick on XB1 or PS4. This will show the item's full description, including the ilvl. It can also be found by hovering over an item with the mouse cursor, and then typing /itemlevel in chat.

There are various theories on how the item level calculation is done. One theory is that the level is a number derived from a formula that calculates the value of an item's stats are worth. Item Stats

However every item will have at least one stat within that range unless they are an item that is unique, or an item that has a God Roll from a raid boss.

Another thing that could change is the possibility of upgrading equipment without having to reroll the affixes, or choose which stats to increase. Similar to the base equipment, this would have to be done per item and the interface for item comparison will not show all possible stats at once.

Item Luck

A player's Luck stat stacks up to increase the chances of finding items and the properties that are spawned from loot drops and the strength of these properties. It does not, however directly impact damage or the ability to upgrade items. It gives players an opportunity to get better equipment earlier in the game. This is particularly useful for early game runs, because players tend to put defenses and weapon scaling over raw damage gains.

In addition to influencing item discovery, Luck also increases the chances of success when upgrading items using the Blacksmith. This isn't to be confused with the Blacksmith's overall chance of upgrading that increase with each item level. These can also be increased by using anti-materials like a Scroll of Strength and a Jewel of Blessing.

Armor, shields and weapons can spawn or be crafted by using the Luck property, with an initial value of 40. These items can be enhanced by golden ingots, spined leather, or oak boards (depending on the type of material used) to grant a further +40 Luck, or to increase the existing Luck of an item, up to 140.

Certain items, like the weapon that is infused with hollow can also be outfitted to increase the damage dealt by any skill that is able to deal damage by five percent. These items can be found in the shops or made using the right ingredients.

Item Failure

Upgrades to items are expensive and not all upgrades will be successful. However, there are cash shop items which allow players to increase their success rate or prevent them from losing an item if the upgrade item is unsuccessful.

The success rate of an upgrade can be seen in the Honing UI. The percentage is the chances of successfully upgrading the item, and can be enhanced by adding Additional Materials or Special Materials. The percentage of success can only be increased so much, and the chance that an upgrade will fail cannot exceed 100%..

The Luck of an item can affect the success of an upgrade. Every item has an average success rate of 25%, and every item with Luck increases this chance by five percent.

Note that item upgrades are rendered above the inventory items which means that enchantment glints and other effects can be masked by the overlays.
