Item upgrades are a common and important way to improve the performance of a variety of items in Path of Exile. They can be a fantastic source of extra damage and more AD or even more attaches.

Often times however, upgraded Common and Magic gear is often surpassed by Rare-grade equipment due to their high requirements.

Armor

Armor upgrades are a type of upgrade that can be used on armor and weapon items. They boost the performance of the item that they're connected to. Armor upgrades are available in the world of the game and are available from Blacksmiths on bonfires. They can also be salvaged by using an expert or higher salvage kits to recover upgrades from the items.

The level of an armor's or weapon's upgrade determines the amount of damage it can take on. The absorption of damage by an item of armor will increase when it's upgraded to the maximum upgrade level. It is important to keep in mind that this will increase the weight of the armor, which means it must be more heavy.

There are several kinds of armor upgrades that are that are available in the game and each one has distinct effects. Certain upgrades give armor an extra amount of health points while others make it stronger and lighter. The kind of armor upgrade an item can receive is indicated by the name of the upgrade as shown in the table below.

Some of the upgrades are also magic or a hybrid of technology and magic which is identified by a "Magic" or "Hybrid" entry in the table below. Some upgrades also require charges to use. These are identified as "Charges" entries in the table. The charges associated with these upgrades refresh every day or never expire, dependent on the upgrade items.

The cheapest method to upgrade armor is by using Iron Ore, which can be obtained by exploring the area and looting small loot chests. Titanium is more costly, but can be found at the smelters in Orgrimmar and Stormwind City. Certain upgrades, such as the Reforge and the Hot Potato Books, can only be applied to higher level armor pieces. These upgrades can provide a significant improvements in performance and are worth the investment, particularly for one-handed weapons.

The player should be aware, however, that upgrading a piece to its max upgrade level will boost its defense. However, it will also decrease its agility and its speed. For this reason, it is typically not recommended to upgrade the majority of armor pieces that are higher than +9 since the added defense is usually not worth the additional weight and power cost of the upgrades required.

Weapons

Weapon upgrades give players to enhance certain aspects of their weapon. For example, an upgrade may improve the damage that is caused by a shotgun's shells or the accuracy of a sniper rifle. Unlike other upgrade components, jewels can be swapped by a different identical jewel without damaging the original one. However, you can only replace a jewel in an item of equipment only once.

It is normal to use more jewels to enhance the appearance of. The jewels can also enhance performance and make a harder surface than steel, so that the repeated friction from pivots does not damage them.

A Glyphmaster can provide glyphs to enhance the appearance of your weapons and shields. These glyphs offer a small boost and can be swapped, but they're not guaranteed to appear as loot. The first trinket a player can unlock is the cloak. It gives a small, but useful bonus in movement speed and evasion. Then, they can purchase amulets, rings and necklaces in a similar fashion to how the player acquires weapons and armor. Each piece of equipment comes with an upgrade slot that is either universal or jewel. Universal upgrades provide smaller bonuses and can be used in any type of equipment while jewelry cannot be changed or upgraded and only works with certain kinds of trinkets.

These trinkets can provide additional bonuses and abilities that are active when the hero isn't in combat. This lets a hero be more efficient when they are not active. It also helps compensate for the absence of good slot in the talent tree or team that are normally filled by the hero's Best item upgrader stats.

A good guideline for trinket upgrades is to prioritize BiS (Best-in-Slot) items that you aren't planning to replace soon, followed by items with desirable stats that are less important than the iLevel of the item upgrader mod to be upgraded. This is especially true when you are looking to upgrade multiple statistics on an item. It's better to upgrade one important stat than two less important ones.
