Item upgrades are a common and crucial method to enhance the performance of a variety of items in Path of Exile. They can be a fantastic source of damage or more AD or even more affixes.

Sometimes, however, upgraded Common and Magic gear is often surpassed by Rare-grade gear because of their high requirements.

Armor

Armor upgrades are a form of upgrade that can be applied to weapon and armor items. They improve the performance of the item upgrader kit they are connected to. Some upgrades give armor a greater number of health points, while others make it stronger and lighter. The type of armor upgrade that an item can get will be identified by the name of the upgrade, as illustrated in the table below.

Some of the upgrades also require magic or a combination of technology and magic, as shown by the "Magic" and "Hybrids" entries in the table below. Jewels

All tiers of jewels are crafted at the Jeweler, with the exception of the rare and legendary jewels that require you to be at a high enough level to qualify for them. Jewels can be replaced with another jewel without destroying the original. However it is only possible to replace a jewel in an item upgrade of equipment only once.

Utilizing more jewels in a move can make it feel more comfortable and is usually used to enhance the aesthetics of the movement. Apart from improving performance, the jewels also create a surface that is harder than metal, so repeated friction from pivots won't cause damage as easily.

In addition to the above upgrades, the player can also acquire glyphs for their weapons and shields from a Glyphmaster. These glyphs provide a small boost and can be exchanged, however they're not guaranteed to appear as loot. Glyphs, like jewelry, can be upgraded by the Jeweler to exchange gold and Scattered Crystals. Glyphs may also be removed and returned to the inventory. Other upgrade components such as traits or aegis cannot be exchanged, and can only be recovered through an upgrade extractor, or salvaging with Black Lion Salvage Kit or Ascended Salvage.

Trinkets

Trinkets are a great way to give your character a variety of small, but valuable, advantages. You can find them in the start-up area as loot or personal story rewards. They are also available from vendors as well as through the completion of road interactions. They can also be found on the Trading Post, or crafted by jewelers.

The first trinkets a player unlocks will be the cloak, which grants a small, but valuable boost to movement speed and evasion. After that, they'll be able to acquire rings, amulets, and necklaces in the same fashion to how the player acquires armor and weapons. Every piece of equipment has a slot for an upgrade which can be universal or jewel. Universal upgrades offer fewer benefits and can be placed in any type of equipment, while jewelry cannot be replaced or upgraded, and only works with certain kinds of trinkets.

These trinkets can also grant buffs and skills that are active even when the character is not in combat. This allows a hero to be more efficient while inactive. It can also compensate for the absence of strong slots in the team or talent tree which would normally be filled by a hero's top stats.

In general trinket upgrades should be prioritized over BiS (Best in Slot) items that you will not replace anytime soon.
