Item upgrades can be used to boost the stats of an item. Depending on the type of upgrade you choose, it can boost the rarity of an item, or its Mark Level and boost additional stats.

The process of upgrading gear in The War Within requires a set number of Flightstones and Crests, and each item has an upgrade track. Each upgrade increases the price of the next item by a specific amount.

Item Level

The value of an item's base stats increase when it is upgraded. This value is the sum of all of an item's upgraded perks (attack magic attack and defense). Upgrading items can be expensive, depending on the upgrader and what kind of upgrade you decide to make. This is due to the fact that many perks must be replaced to allow the item to be upgraded.

It can also be used as a gating requirement while queueing for dungeons, raids and scenarios. It can also be used to limit how much PvP gear players can wear since PvP is not available at a lower level. Players can view their average level of items on their character sheet.

The level of an item can help players compare the power of equipment when deciding to purchase or sell. It's a good gauge of an item's worth and the amount of damage it is capable of causing. The level of an item can be used to evaluate items when looking at the inventory of a seller.

On PC, you can see the level of the item by pressing ALT or using the left stick on XB1 or PS4. This will display the complete description of the item, as well as its level. It can also be found by hovering an item with the mouse cursor, and then typing /itemlevel into chat.

There are various theories on how the calculation of an item's level is carried out. One theory is that the item level is a number that comes from a formula that calculates how much an item's stats are worth. It is based on the fact that different perks are valued differently, and that gems found in sockets increase the item's value. This can result in an item's ilvl which is calculated and is usually very close to Blizzards actual item level.

Item Stats

The possible ranges of stats for an item are based on the level of the item, but every item is guaranteed to have at least one stat within the specified range, unless it is an item that is unique or an item that is a God roll from a boss of a raid.

Another thing that could be changed by adding the option to upgrade the equipment without rerolling the affixes, or selecting which stats to increase. But, like base equipment, this would have to be performed on a per-item basis and the interface for item comparison will not show all the stats that could be gained or lost at once.

Item Luck

The Luck stat of a player increases the chance of finding items, the properties that are generated by loot, and the strength of these properties. However, it does not directly impact damage or the ability to upgrade items. It gives players the chance to upgrade their gear earlier in the game. This is especially useful for early game runs, since players tend to prioritize defenses and weapon scaling over raw damage gains.

In addition to influencing item discovery, Luck also increases the chances of success when upgrading items using the Blacksmith. This should not be confused with the Blacksmith's overall upgrade chance that increases with each level of the item and can be further enhanced through the use of an anti-material such as a Scroll of Strength or a Jewel of Blessing.

Armor, shields and weapons have a default Luck value of 40. These items can then be upgraded with golden ingots, spined leather, or oak boards (depending on the material of the item) to grant a further +40 Luck or to boost the existing Luck of an item, up to 140.

Certain items, like the Hollow-infused weapon can also be crafted to increase the damage of any skill that deals damage by five percent. These items can be found in the shops or made with the right ingredients.

Item Failure

Upgrades to items are a costly process and not all upgrades will succeed. However, there are cash shop items that allow players to increase their chance of success or stop them from losing an item if the upgrade fails.

When you upgrade an item the success rate is shown in the Honing UI. The percentage represents the likelihood of successfully upgrading an item. This can be increased by using Additional Materials or Special materials. There are limits to the extent to which success rates can be increased and the chance of an upgrade failing cannot be greater than 100%..

The success of an upgrades is also influenced by the luck of that item. Every item has an average success rate of 25% and each item with Luck increases that chance by five percent.

It is important to note that upgrade items are rendered above the items in the inventory which means that enchantment glints and other effects could be masked by the overlays. If you wish to disable the upgrade overlays, the config option decoration.renderUpgradeOverlays can be set to False in the Item Upgrader CORE client config.
