Item upgrades are a way to increase the stats of an item. Based on the type of upgrade it could increase an item's Mark Level or Rarity, as well as boost other stats.

The item level can be checked by pressing the ALT key on a PC or using the left stick (L3) on XB1 and PS4. This will display the complete description of the item, including its ilvl. You can also find it by hovering over an item and typing in /itemlevel chat.

There are a few theories on how the calculation of the item's level is carried out. One theory is that the item level is a number derived from a formula that determines the amount an item's stats are worth. It takes into consideration the fact that different perks have different worth and that gems in sockets increase the value of the item overall. This process could result in a calculated amount for the item's ilvl, which is usually close to Blizzard's real item level.

However, this isn't the only factor which affects an item's ilvl, since the size of the area the item was dropped in could alter the value of its stats, for instance by adding an amount to its haste rating or crit rating. This means that items dropped at higher levels will have higher value than items dropped in lower-level instances.

Item Stats

The stats of an item are a major element in what makes or breaks an item upgrader mod for players. The game makes use of them in a variety of ways to encourage players to not restrict themselves to a particular weapon and to encourage players to experiment with other weapons. The stat modifications of weapons boost base stats. These stat mods are then enhanced by a player's skill.

The upgrades to items add by increasing certain stats on the item. The rarity of an item determines its upgrade cost. For example, a grey or white item can only be upgraded once, whereas an item with rare tiers will be upgraded several times with higher prices.

Players can choose to upgrade an item by specific stats or reroll the affixes. The range of stats is determined by the item upgrade's level. However, all items will contain at least one stat in that range unless they are a unique item upgrader mod or the item is a God Roll from a raid boss.

This is another aspect that could be changed by adding the option to upgrade the equipment without rerolling the affixes, or selecting which stats to increase. However, as with the base equipment, this would have to be done on a per-item level, and the item compare interface would not display all the possible stats that were gained or lost at the same time.

Item Luck

A player's Luck stat stacks up to increase the odds of item discoveries, the properties spawned on loot drops and the strength of these properties. It does not, however directly affect damage or the ability to upgrade items. It provides players with an opportunity to get better gear earlier in the game. This is particularly useful in early game runs because players tend to put defenses and weapon scaling over raw damage gains.

In addition to influencing item discovery, Luck also increases the chances of success when upgrading items using the Blacksmith. This is not to be confused with the Blacksmith's overall chance of upgrading that increases with each level and can be further increased by using an anti-material, such as a Scroll of Strength or a Jewel of Blessing.

Armor, shields, and weapons have an initial Luck value of 40. These items can be augmented by using golden ingots or spined leather (depending on the material they are made of) to add another 40 luck or to increase the luck of the item to 140.

Moreover there are certain items, like the Hollow weapon, which is infused with Hollow, can be equipped to increase the damage dealt by any damage-dealing skill by 5%. These items can be purchased at the store or crafted using the right ingredients.

Item Failure

Not all upgrades are successful. However, there are cash shop items that allow players to boost their chances of success or even prevent them from losing an item in the event that the upgrade fails.

When you upgrade an item the rate of success is displayed in the Honing UI. The percentage is the probability of successfully upgrading an item. This can be increased by using Additional Materials or Special materials. There are limits to how much the success rates can be improved and the chance of an upgrade failing can't be greater than 100%..

The success of an can be affected by the luck of that item. Every item has an average success rate of 25% and every item that has Luck increases the chance of success by 5percent.

The item upgrade overlays are rendered above items in the inventory. This can obscure enchantment effects and other effects. If you wish to disable the upgrade overlays, the config option decoration.renderUpgradeOverlays can be set to False in the Item Upgrader CORE client config.
