Item upgrades are a common and crucial method to enhance the performance of numerous items in Path of Exile. They can also provide additional damage, AD or even affixes.

Rare-grade equipment can be superior to upgraded Common or Magic equipment due to their higher requirements.

Armor

Armor upgrades can be applied to both weapon and armor items. They boost the effectiveness of the item upgrader mod they are connected to. Weapons

Trinkets

Trinkets are small pieces of equipment that provide a wide range of small, but beneficial benefits to your hero. They can be acquired starting in the starter areas as loot, personal story rewards, from vendors, and through doing road interactions. They may also be crafted by jewelers, and then found or purchased on the Trading Post.

The first trinkets that a player unlocks will be the cloak, which gives an unimportant but beneficial boost to speed of movement and evasion. The player can then acquire necklaces, rings, and amulets in a similar fashion similar to how they obtained weapons and armor. Every piece of equipment has a slot for an upgrade that is either universal or jewel. Universal upgrades are smaller and can be used on any piece of equipment. Jewels cannot be upgraded or replaced and are only compatible with certain trinkets.

These trinkets also grant additional buffs and skills that are active whenever the hero is not in combat. This allows the hero to be more efficient when they are not active. A good guideline for trinket upgrades is to prioritize BiS (Best-in-Slot) items that you will not replace soon, followed by any items with desirable stats that are less important than the iLevel of the item Upgrade that is being upgraded. This is particularly true if an item has multiple stats that you'd like to upgrade since it's generally more beneficial to upgrade one important stat rather than two sub-optimal ones.

Jungle players will often upgrade their yellow trinket to a red one at the beginning of the game. Top and mid players on the other hand, will choose a green or a pink ward, based on the game's matchup. These choices will have a significant impact on the hero's abilities to control maps.

Aside from the items listed above, players can find other items in the form of awards and trophies. They can be obtained by completing certain milestones in the story.
