Machine learning can help diagnose ADHD

The diagnosis of adult ADHD has proved to be complex. Despite the rise of machine learning technologies and other diagnostic tools, methods for diagnosing ADHD remain mostly subjective. This can lead to delays in the initiation of treatment. To increase the effectiveness and reproducibility of the procedure, researchers have attempted to create a computer-based ADHD diagnostic tool, called QbTest. It's an automated CPT combined with an infrared camera that measures motor activity.

An automated diagnostic system could help reduce the time required to diagnose adult ADHD. Patients could also benefit from early detection.

Several studies have investigated the use of ML to detect ADHD. The majority of these studies have relied on MRI data. Other studies have investigated the use of eye movements. These methods have numerous advantages, including the reliability and accessibility of EEG signals. However, these measures have limitations in terms of sensitivity and specificity.

A study conducted by Aalto University researchers analyzed children's eye movements during the game of virtual reality to determine whether the ML algorithm could detect differences between normal and ADHD children. The results demonstrated that machine learning algorithms can be used to recognize ADHD children.

Another study looked at machine learning algorithms' effectiveness. The results showed that random forest algorithms are more effective in terms of robustness and lower risk prediction errors. Permutation tests also showed greater accuracy than labels randomly assigned.
