A biopsy involves the removal of the smallest piece of tissue that is examined. This procedure will reveal the stage of mesothelioma and if it is epithelioid, biphasic, or sarcomatoid.

If mesothelioma has reached an early stage doctors can remove all of the tumors and provide curative treatment. The doctor will also be able to determine whether the cancer has spread to the abdomen. They may then recommend palliative care for the patient, including paracentesis that drains fluid from the abdomen.

The outlook for patients is worse when mesothelioma is advanced. This is because the tumors can become resistant to certain treatments, and they may recur. The doctor may suggest a combination of chemotherapy and surgery. The surgical options include cytoreduction surgery along with hyperthermic intraperitoneal therapy. This combination is more likely than chemotherapy on its own to improve the outlook of patients.
